San Juan Bonfires (A Coruña)
Every 20th June, the San Juan Bonfire, which has been turned into a papier-mache monument, is placed at Riazor in order to be burned in the early morning of June 24th. It is lived with special intensity in the city of A Coruña, which goes out to celebrate the most magical night of the year on Riazor and Orzan beaches.
There are communal bonfires and “sardiñadas” everywhere, which light the “Noite Meiga” of A Coruña. Rites, traditions, beliefs and superstitions are mixed in this night in which the really important thing is to meet around the fire in order to scare off the bad spirits by means of the “conxuro” of the “queimada”.
